Bayer, the German chemical multinational organization, announced the $66-billion-dollar acquisition of Monsanto, its US based agricultural business rival. A merger of the two represents a further consolidation of big agricultural businesses which produce seed, pesticide, and herbicide products. The deal is expected to finalize in 2018, however European Regulators have promised to scrutinize the deal and have yet to give approval.
These two companies have a long history in disregarding public health in pursuit of profit.
Currently, Monsanto is facing many lawsuits claiming that their Roundup herbicide caused Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in some people, who unfortunately, came into contact with the chemical. These suits allege that Monsanto failed to label and warn of Roundup’s cancer causing potential. During the judicial proceeding many documents revealed, through discovery process, that the company worked with scientists to manipulate the safety data and worked with government officials at the EPA who oversaw Roundup’s cancer assessment.
Bayer is one of the largest producers of neonicotinoid chemicals, which has been linked to mass die-offs of honey bees. To preserve the company image and shield itself from litigation, Bayer waged a large scale public information war to obscure the negative perception of Bayer and its chemical products. The company did this for the purpose of keeping their product legal to sell in the U.S.
This merger of Bayer and Monsanto would continue the technological study and practice of DNA manipulation of the food supply. If that is not bad enough, they would also further the “advancement” of agricultural herbicide and pesticide resistant plants. Maybe they would package the seeds from Monsanto and coat them with Bayer’s neonicotinoid chemicals then spray a little bit of Roundup on top of the GMO plant, sounds yummy right? Big business looking out for you and your family, right? Think again.
